OmniPeek 6.0.7 and small packet

Postby roundhillmark » Tue Apr 06, 2010 8:00 am

I am doing some testing on 6.0.7, and ran across this issue.
Using a network traffic generator (Ixia) to generate only small packets (ex. 64 byte). OmniPeek loaded on Windows 7 Ultimate N x32, OmniPeek seems to bounce in and out of a "not responding" state. I assume it is due to the number of interrupts. The strange thing is, if I load OmniPeek on Windows 7 Ultimate N x64, I do not see the same issue. I am guessing x64 handles the interrupts better?

If I change the size of the packet to random or to a larger size it works fine.

Has anyone else seen this? Any ideas?

Thanks

It is a known fact that OmniPeek with any interface will have more issues processing small packets than larger ones. In a test environment with all small packets (64 bytes) what you are seeing is to be expected. Why it works better on the 64 bit OS we are not sure, as OP is still running as a 32-bit app. Perhaps the 64 bit drivers for the NIC allow larger buffers?
