Ethernet Card

Which is faster a USB port or a Ethernet Card? I'm referring to the 10/100/1000 Mbps PCI Ethernet card and comparing it to the speed of a USB port. My friend just had high speed cable internet connected. The only connection they could use to connect the cable modem to the computer was an empty USB port.
