Ethernet Card

How do you re-install the ethernet card on windows xp? I received a used computer from a friend. The computer (unfortunately) is currently running Windows XP. Upon trying to connect to the internet ie explorer is stating that there is no wired or wireless pc card. I did my best to have the computer find the appropriate drivers, but it seems that without the ethernet card I can't connect to the internet to get the drivers. Any idea how to go about this another way?
